                                                   Tsukimi Dango Recipe:

Tsukimi Dango (月見団子) are traditional Japanese rice-flour dumplings made for Tsukimi (Moon Viewing), especially around the autumn full moon. They’re usually arranged in a pyramid to represent offerings to the moon. 🌕🍡

🌕 Tsukimi Dango Recipe

Ingredients

Makes about 15–20 dango

• 150 g joshinko (Japanese non-glutinous rice flour)
• 50 g shiratamako or glutinous rice flour
• 120–150 ml warm water
• 1–2 tbsp sugar, optional

Instructions

1. Mix the flours
   Combine the joshinko and shiratamako in a bowl. Add sugar if you prefer slightly sweet dango.
2. Add water gradually
   Slowly add warm water while mixing until you have a soft dough similar to an earlobe in texture—soft but not sticky.
3. Shape the dango
   Divide the dough into approximately 15–20 pieces and roll each into a smooth ball.
4. Boil
   Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the dango. When they float to the surface, continue cooking for about 2–3 minutes.
5. Cool
   Transfer them to cold water, then drain well.
6. Arrange 🌕
   Traditionally, arrange 15 dango in a pyramid:
   • Bottom: 9
   • Middle: 4
   • Top: 2

🍯 Optional Mitarashi Sauce

For a sweet version, make a simple sauce with:

• 2 tbsp soy sauce
• 2 tbsp sugar
• 2 tbsp mirin
• 100 ml water
• 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water

Simmer the first four ingredients, then add the cornstarch slurry and stir until thickened. Drizzle over the dango.

Traditional Tsukimi dango are often served plain, allowing the rice flavor to shine. They can also be eaten with sweet red bean paste, kinako, or sweet soy sauce.

In Japan the season of mid-autumn, under the full moon, we celebrate the harvest and marvel at the passing of the seasons. This event is called Tsukimi (お月見), or Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋の名月). This year it falls on Friday, September 25,2026.

Tsukimi (月見) means “moon viewing.” This dish traditionally features an egg whose round yolk resembles the full moon. A simple and delicious version is Tsukimi Soba, buckwheat noodles in a warm Japanese broth.

🍜 Ingredients — 2 servings

Noodles & toppings

• 2 servings soba noodles
• 2 fresh eggs
• 2 green onions, thinly sliced
• 1 sheet nori, cut into strips
• Optional: mushrooms, spinach, kamaboko, or tempura

Broth

• 3 cups dashi
• 3 tbsp soy sauce
• 2 tbsp mirin
• 1 tsp sugar
• ½ tsp grated ginger, optional

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the broth:
   Combine dashi, soy sauce, mirin, and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer.
2. Cook the soba:
   Cook the noodles according to the package directions. Drain and rinse briefly with cold water.
3. Warm the noodles:
   Add the cooked soba to the hot broth for about 30 seconds.
4. Add the eggs:
   Divide the noodles and broth between two bowls. Carefully crack one egg into each bowl. Cover for 2–4 minutes, until the whites are cooked but the yolks remain soft.
5. Garnish:
   Add sliced green onions and nori. Add mushrooms or spinach if desired.
6. Serve immediately while the egg yolk is still soft. Break the “moon” over the noodles and enjoy. 🌕🥢

For a more traditional Tsukimi Udon, simply substitute thick udon noodles for the soba. You can also add tempura, creating a popular combination of crispy tempura and the “moon” egg.
